About 200,000 visitors and 10,000 guests from 55 countries are expected to attend in the 14th Pusan International Film Festival

TThe Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) is held in Pusan, Korea¡¯s secondlargest city, every year. Located on the southeastern tip of the peninsula and with a population of 3.6 million, the city is known for its many beautiful beaches.

Growing popularity

Established in 1996 as the first international film festival in Korea, the PIFF celebrates its 14th anniversary this year. The festival is primarily noncompetitive and festival-based, emphasizing spontaneous audience participation and the introduction of less popular but still valuable films. National popularity has been built through various concurrent events held on the beautiful beaches of Busan, one of the reasons for its popularity among the young. The festival evaluates that it has successfully fostered a film culture facilitated by active audience participation, especially among the young, as well as favorably introducing Korean films to the global film society by becoming one of the most dynamic cinema festivals in Asia. It has played a leading role in introducing Asian movies, too, with programs such as ¡®A Window on Asian Cinema¡¯, which is a global channel for movies produced in Asian countries.

A place of opportunities

While the festival is non-competitive, there are awards, such as the New Currents Awards (previously the only international competition section to feature the first or second feature films by future leading directors of Asian cinema) and the Asian Filmmaker of the Year. In addition to the New Currents competition for new Asian directors, the festival recently established the New Flash Forward competition for non-Asian filmmakers. It also features independent short films and documentary films produced by local artists, with awards available in these areas, also. The festival is a melting pot for filmmakers to gather to seek and share opportunities, while the Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP), a pre-market event provided by the festival, offers opportunities to meet with coproducers, investors, and distributors.

Record features in 2009

Hosted by the Pusan International Film Festival Organization Committee and supported by Korea¡¯s Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism and Metropolitan City of Busan, this years festival will feature 355 movies from approximately 70 countries, a record number and a great increase from 173 films from 31 countries in 1996. The opening movie on October 8 will be Good Morning President, a comedy directed by Jang Jin and starring Jang Dong-gun, while the Message, a thriller co-directed by Chen Kuo-fu and Gao Qunshu of China, will close the festival on October 16. About 10,000 industry people from 55 countries and 200,000 audience members are expected to visit this year, with a total of 269,332 seats available in 37 screening venues across Busan.

This year¡¯s program features include: Gala Presentation (master cineaste¡¯s new or famous films, 7 films from 6 countries), A Window on Asian Cinema (brand new, representative films by talented Asian filmmakers, 53 films from 23 countries), New Currents (12 films from 11 countries), Korean Cinema Retrospective (featuring Ha Kilchong, Yoo Hyunmok, and Archeology of Korean Cinema), Wide Angle (outstanding short films, animation, documentaries, and experimental films, 69 films from 24 countries), Flash Forward (collection of first or second films of up-and-coming filmmakers from non-Asian countries, 11 films from 16 countries), etc. The year¡¯s special programs (46 films from 17 countries) include a Filipino Independent Film Special, Dario Argento Falling in Giallo, and a Special Commemoration of the Late Korean actress, Jang Jin Young.
